Nanaimo wrestlers, many of them bound for nationals this spring, kept sharp at Port Alberni’s tough annual tournament last weekend.

Dover Bay Secondary School and Nanaimo District Secondary School had athletes entered in the Alberni Invitational Tournament and combined for eight medals.

Kyle Clare of NDSS won gold in his division, while Dover’s Faye Tuck and Karling Van Hest both won gold, as well. Tuck was also named the tourney’s Outstanding School Girl Wrestler.

Also medalling at Port Alberni were other Dover athletes Nathan Valsangkar, Ryan Yewchin, Kim Van Hest and Katie Van Hest, who all won silver, and Daniel Fleury, who won bronze.

Wrestlers are in action at the Vancouver Island zone championships at Port Hardy on Saturday (Feb. 12), then come provincials later this month in Abbotsford. For more information, please e-mail nanaimowrestling@gmail.com.
