An all-Nanaimo high school basketball matchup saw both teams play tough, with the favourites coming out on top.

The Wellington Wildcats senior AA girls defeated the Nanaimo District Islanders 56-36  on Thursday at the Wellington Secondary School gym.

The first half featured some hard fouls and ended with a 28-15 edge for the home team.

“We just brought up the intensity and tried to smile a little bit because we were a little bit down the first half,” said Sara Simovic, Wildcats point guard. “We picked it up and finished off strong in the end.”

Simovic led all scorers with 22 points and Mariah Van Sickle scored nine points. For NDSS, Leigh Richardson tallied 13 points.
