VIU volleyball teams come home

Vancouver Island University’s women’s and men’s volleyball teams play their PacWest home openers this Friday (Nov. 9) at the VIU gym.

The VIU Mariners got a chance to hone their game on the road, and now they’re ready for their unveiling.

Vancouver Island University’s women’s and men’s volleyball teams play their Pacific Western Athletic Association home openers this Friday (Nov. 9) at the VIU gym.

The Capilano Blues provide the opposition that night, and again on Saturday afternoon for rematches.

The M’s women, defending national champions, are off to a 5-1 start in 2012-13. The Mariners swept the Douglas Royals in straight sets last weekend on the mainland and Shane Hyde, VIU coach, said his team played well and was pleased that the Royals provided tough  competition to challenge his squad.

Friday’s scores were 25-9, 26-24, 25-20 and Saturday’s scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

The M’s men (3-3) will be trying to bounce back from a pair of losses to the Royals. Douglas won Friday, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20, but Saturday’s match went to five sets before the M’s fell 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 17-25, 15-13.

GAME ON … The women’s teams from VIU and Cap play Friday at 6 p.m., starting with a pre-game ceremony to raise the Mariners' Canadian Colleges' Athletic Association 2011-12 national championship banner. Men’s action will follow at 8 p.m. On Saturday the women play at 1 p.m., the men at 3 p.m.
