Volleyball is a team game, but individual contributions certainly helped the Vancouver Island University Mariners sweep some tough competition on the weekend.

Mariners players Milo Warren and Leanna Gildersleeve each got a nod as Pacific Western Athletic Association Athlete of the Week as the M’s men’s and women’s teams won matches against the Capilano Blues on Friday and Saturday at the VIU gym.

Warren had 17 kills in Friday’s match and 14 in Saturday’s match.

"Milo continues to bring strong veteran leadership and over the past month of the season this leadership has started to rub off on our entire team," said Abe Avender, M's coach, in a press release. "Milo's incredible athletic ability makes him one of the most dominating players in the league and now that his consistency has reached all-star levels he will be a huge impact player."

Gildersleeve had 19 kills and 26 digs on Friday and nine kills on Saturday.

"Leanna is becoming the player she was a few years back when she led her MacEwan team to a CCAA silver medal and was recognized as the player of the match at the CCAA national final," said Shane Hyde, VIU coach, in a press release.

GAME ON … The Mariners host Columbia Bible College this Friday (Nov. 25) and Saturday at the VIU gym. On Friday the women play at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 7:45 p.m. On Saturday the ladies go at 1 p.m. with the men at 2:45 p.m.
