VIU Mariners win a pair against Pirates

VIU’s men’s basketball team played its final pre-season games this weekend at the VIU gym, sweeping the Peninsula Pirates 71-68 and 69-64.

The VIU Mariners are getting better as they get ready to tip off basketball season for real.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team played its final pre-season games this weekend at the VIU gym, sweeping the Peninsula Pirates by scores of 71-68 and 69-64.

On Sunday, the Mariners led by as many and 12 points and although the game got close in the fourth quarter, the M’s protected the lead and held on.

Jalen Schlegel led VIU with 24 points and his nine rebounds were also a team high. Bryson Cox scored 11 points.

For the Pirates, Kevin Baker scored 16 points and Sam Velez had 14 points and eight rebounds.

GAME ON … The Mariners begin the PacWest season this Saturday (Oct. 29) as the Camosun Chargers visit the VIU gym for an 8 p.m. tipoff. Look for a season preview later this week in the News Bulletin.
