The VIU Mariners didn’t have to look far to find their first recruit for next season.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team announced Tuesday that Alex Staniforth of Wellington Secondary School will join the team for 2017-18.

“That’s our first signing of the year and it’s one we’ve been looking at for awhile, so we’re excited to have him on board,” said Matt Kuzminski, Mariners coach.

Staniforth has been the highest-scoring Nanaimo high school player so far this season and won an Island championship with the Wildcats in 2015-16.

Kuzminski thinks Staniforth will be able to play anywhere on the floor at the college level.

“He’ll have the size and athleticism. Right away he’ll be able to compete and make an impact of some kind, I think,” the coach said. “Alex has a lot of potential and versatility as a player.”
