The VIU Mariners overwhelmed two visiting teams on the weekend.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team swept its home games Friday and Saturday with eye-popping scores of 121-59 against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and then 136-63 against the Kwantlen Eagles.

The M’s shared playing time evenly, with guys subbing in off the bench right away.

“Everybody came in and kept the same level of intensity up that wanted to have,” said Matt Kuzminski, the team’s coach.

He said his team's pressure defence led to more than 30 turnovers in both games, which led to a lot of easy baskets in transition.

The coach was told after Friday’s win that it was a school record for points, and the record lasted less than 24 hours.

“It kind of made a game like that, that was maybe a little uninteresting at times, it gave it something,” the coach said.

Justin King scored 28 points and Bryson Cox added 20 in Saturday’s record game. The day before, Harrison Stupich scored 20 and Jerod Dorby contributed 18.

VIU’s women’s basketball team also swept its weekend games, defeating CBC by a 65-45 score and then getting past Kwantlen 59-48. In the Friday game, Jenna Carver had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Sienna Pollard added 14.

GAME ON … VIU’s hoops teams play at Capilano and Quest on Friday (Feb. 27) and Saturday, respectively.
