VIBI goes to bat at nationals

Nanaimo’s Canadian College Baseball Conference team, the VIBI Mariners, begin play today (May 8) at nationals in Lethbridge, Alta.

The Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners have been trending upward in the win column just in time for playoffs.

Nanaimo’s Canadian College Baseball Conference team begins play today (May 8) at nationals in Lethbridge, Alta.

The Mariners won five of their last eight regular-season games leading up to playoffs as they travelled through the Interior en route to the championships.

On Saturday the M's lost 2-1 to Thompson Rivers University and beat the Okanagan Coyotes 12-5. The next day the Mariners edged Okie 3-2 before handling TRU 7-3. On Monday, VIBI made up games against Prairie Baseball Academy, losing 2-0 and 4-2.

Chad Schultz had two hits in the first game of the weekend, and in the blowout win it was Tyson Dyck leading the offence with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Greg Brady hit a single and a double and Jeremy Harasymchuk threw 3 1/3 innings for the win.

The next day against the Coyotes, Cody Pendergast was 4-for-5 with two doubles, Schultz singled and doubled and Dallas Monk was 2-for-3 at the dish. Austin Penner threw two perfect relief innings for the win. Against the Pack, Schultz, Ty Armstrong and Monk had two RBIs each and Riley Moskaluk was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and two earned runs over four innings.

Mitch Hawkins had a pair of hits in the shutout loss.
