V.I. Raiders win big on the road

The V.I. Raiders headed off on the road and were able to outscore the opposition.

Nanaimo’s B.C. Football Conference team defeated the Kamloops Broncos 42-24 in the desert Saturday.

The home team started fast and led 14-10 after one quarter, but the visitors turned that around in before halftime, scoring 19 points in the second quarter to take control of the football game.

“Our defence did an outstanding job and went out on the field and held their own all day and our offence came through in the end,” said Doug Hocking, Raiders coach.

V.I. spread its offence around with the run and pass game.

Quarterback Jamie Ybarra was 13-for-20 passing for 167 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He connected with D’Shon Dingwell, Brycen Mayoh and Adam Finnik on TD receptions. Finnik had 75 receiving yards in the game.

Zander Bailey led the rushing attack with 90 yards on 18 carries. Mayoh scored a TD on the ground.

V.I.’s other points came from kicker James Parker, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals with a long of 44 yards.

On defence, Travis Novak made eight solo tackles and assisted on three more. Brody Taylor had two sacks and Quinton Bowles had a sack and a fumble recovery. Matt Cox also had a sack. Shawn Arabsky made an interception.

GAME ON … The Raiders host the Langley Rams on Saturday (Oct. 7) at 1 p.m. at Caledonia Park.
