The V.I. Raiders are about to kick off camp.

Nanaimo’s B.C. Football Conference team holds main camp this weekend (July 7-9) at Merle Logan Field.

There are 76 players expected for the camp and Glenn Cook, Raiders general manager, said with the existing core plus a group of newcomers that includes “CIS studs” and top talent coming up from high school, it should make for some great competition.

“It’s going to be high tempo, lots of insertion, so lots of learning,” he said. “It’s going to be … a very physical camp. Guys are still fighting for starting positions.”

The Raiders had good participation at the off-season throw-arounds as more out-of-town players have been making their way to Nanaimo in preparation for the season.

“They’re already a really tight group which is awesome,” Cook said. “It has to be mutual respect, and if a guy shows up and works [hard], he earns the respect of the veterans.”

Camp concludes Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. intrasquad game.
