Unbeaten VIU basketball teams soar to more wins

Mariners men’s and women’s team atop PacWest with 14-0 records

Opponents can’t keep up with the VIU Mariners basketball teams – not on the court, and not in the standings.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams won their games on the road and at home this past weekend to continue to pace the PacWest.

VIU’s men handled the Douglas Royals 97-72 on the mainland Friday, then breezed to a 106-71 win against the last-place Columbia Bible College BearCats on Saturday at the VIU gym.

The Mariners women had similar results, taking care of the second-place Royals by a 66-53 score on the road Friday and then more than doubling the last-place BearCats on Saturday at home, 100-48.

VIU’s men were led Friday by Akoi Yuot, who scored 36 points. Tori Odom scored 19 and Richard Henderson recorded 12 rebounds. On Saturday, Yuot again led the way with 24 points as well as nine rebounds, Henderson had 22 points and Odom scored 21.

For the Mariners women, Shayce Johnston scored 13 points and Ranika Guyton added 11 in Friday’s game. On Saturday, Harriette Mackenzie scored 19 points to go with 11 rebounds, Kayla Gregory added 16 points, Mackenzie Hall scored 15 and Amber Lease dished 15 assists and had six steals.

GAME ON … VIU’s men have a week off, but the VIU women are in action on the road Friday, Feb. 11, against the Langara Falcons.
