Nanaimo Special Olympics athletes will try to bring home medals for their country.

Track and field athlete Ray Lappalainen and 10-pin bowler Crystal Thompson are scheduled to leave today (June 18) for Athens, Greece for the Special Olympics World Summer Games June 25-July 4. Track and field coach Angela Behn is also making the trip.

Sharon Bollenbach, vice-president of sport with Special Olympics Canada, said in a press release the Summer Games are an “incredible opportunity” for all the athletes.

“They have worked incredibly hard for this opportunity to represent Canada in Athens, and we know that they will make their country proud,” she said.

Some 7,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games, including 106 from Canada.
