Track athletes make quite a splash at provincials

Local high school students had terrific success at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships on the weekend.

Local high school students had terrific success at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships on the weekend. Four different Nanaimo schools can claim championships after the three-day meet in Langley.

Dover Bay’s Thomas Oxland won the senior boys’ 800-metre run in one minute, 55.73 seconds. Alyssa Mousseau of Wellington won the junior girls’ 800m in 2:12.20. Nanaimo Christian School’s Marita DeSchiffart won the senior girls’ 1,500m steeplechase and Jason Clare of Nanaimo District won the junior boys’ pole vault.

Dover Bay also picked up two gold medals in the senior boys’ and Grade 8 girls’ 4x400m relays.

Nanaimo’s Madison Heisterman, who goes to school in Duncan, won the junior girls’ 1,500m.

Top-three results include:

Grade 8 girls - Morgan Burke, Dover Bay, second, high jump.

Junior girls - Madison Heisterman, Queen Margaret's, first, 1,500m, second, 800m; Alyssa Mousseau, Wellington, first, 800m; Hassy Bombata, Wellington, second, 200m.

Senior girls - Miryam Bassett, Nanaimo District, second, 1,500m; Marita DeSchiffart, Nanaimo Christian, first, 1,500m steeplechase.

Junior boys - Josh Bailey, Dover, second, 1,500m, third, 3,000m; Jason Clare, Nanaimo District, first, pole vault.

Senior boys - Thomas Oxland, third, 1,500m, first, 800m.
