Track and field meet raises stakes

The Nanaimo Track and Field Club’s Elwood Wylie Memorial meet will be held Saturday (May 24) and Sunday at Rotary Bowl stadium.

The Nanaimo Track and Field Club’s Elwood Wylie Memorial meet is a big deal every year, but never more so than in 2014.

The track meet, Saturday (May 24) and Sunday at Rotary Bowl stadium, is also a qualifier for the Zone 6 team at the B.C. Summer Games. Since the Games are to be held in Nanaimo in July, this is a chance for youths to claim a place in the festivities.

“It’s a one-shot deal for the kids to make the B.C. Summer Games,” said Tyler Heisterman, Nanaimo Track and Field Club coach. “They’ve got to be at [this] meet and they’ve got to put their best foot forward.”

He said eight to 10 Nanaimo athletes made the last Games and he hopes for similar representation this year.

“We’ve got a bunch of athletes that look pretty strong to make the Summer Games team,” he said. “We’ve got some sprinters, middle distance, we’ve got throwers; I’d say we’ve pretty much got all the event’s areas covered with some good, strong athletes.”

The 100-metre dash finals are Saturday at 4 p.m. and the 200m finals are Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
