Six Nanaimo Rowing Club members medal at Shawnigan Lake Regatta

Rowing club in Nanaimo doing part for ParticipAction Community Challenge offering free lessons

Nanaimo Rowing Club members medalled at a high-calibre race on the Island last month.

At the Shawnigan Lake Regatta from May 12-14, Katherine Fournier and Laura McKenzie earned silver in under-19 junior varsity doubles, while Zoe Cripps, Laura McKenzie, Maxance Fransen-Bertran and Shae McKeever took home bronze for U19 mixed quads. In addition, Cripps and McKeever placed fifth and sixth respectively in the lightweight singles event finals.

In other club news, the Nanaimo Rowing Club has also received a grant for the ParticipAction Community Challenge, a nationwide physical activity initiative supported by the Government of Canada in which clubs, teams and individuals in Nanaimo record their activities. The City of Nanaimo could win a first-place prize of $100,000 for use in physical activities and sport initiatives, if it is “the most active community,” a press release from the club stated. The challenge is on till the end of June.

As part of the challenge, the Nanaimo Rowing Club is offering free ‘Come and Try Rowing’ events Wednesday, June 14, and June 24 for people aged 12 years and older. A women- and girls-only event was held Sunday, June 11.
