Seven-a-side soccer starting up again

Packing a lot of soccer into a little space seems to be a formula that works. The Nanaimo Seven-a-Side league, which started this past spring, will return this fall for another eight-week session.

Packing a lot of soccer into a little space seems to be a formula that works.

The Nanaimo Seven-a-Side league, which started this past spring, will return this fall for another eight-week session.

“The response from everyone … was very strong that they wanted more seven-a-side,” said Brandon Curr, one of the organizers.

So the league will start up again Sept. 14, this time at Deverill Park on Haliburton Street. Games are played on a small pitch but with regulation-size goals.

“It’s a fun way to play the game. It’s quick, it’s high scoring,” Curr said. “It’s open to anybody – you can be an everyday Joe Schmoe or a regular Pele and manage to play seven-a-side.”

The league will be split into a competitive division and a co-ed recreational division. Games will go Wednesday nights.
