Road games obstacles in playoff race

Any success the Nanaimo Clippers hope to have in maintaining a playoff position in the B.C. Hockey League is going to have to happen primarily on the road.

Eight of the team’s last 12 games will be away from Frank Crane Arena and Nanaimo had its ups and downs on a mid-week road trip on the Lower Mainland.

The Shipmen fell 6-3 to the Coquitlam Express Wednesday, then defeated the Langley Chiefs 5-4 Thursday.

Nanaimo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period against the Chiefs, went ahead 5-2 in the third and then withstood a Langley comeback attempt in the final minutes.

Samuel Lebrecque, Brett Hartskamp, Kyle Kramer and Myles Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the Clippers in the first period, and Victor Newell scored in the third period. Charles-Andre Pelletier earned the win in the Nanaimo net, facing 33 shots.

The Clippers played catch-up hockey Wednesday against the Express despite outshooting Coquitlam 36-27.

Ryan Stanimir, Mike Domsodi and Zach Martin scored Nanaimo’s goals while Andrew Gladiuk added a pair of assists.

The Clippers sit in fifth place in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference with a 22-20-1-5 record.
