Riders obviously couldn’t wait to get back out on the track.

The Nanaimo BMX Association had a record-breaking start to the 2016 season, as more riders signed up for this past Sunday’s first race of the season than ever before on an opening day.

The race featured 38 motos with 171 riders.

Chris Johnson, association president, said Nanaimo BMX has been active on social media.

“And our members have been so fantastic with word of mouth,” he said. “They know how amazing of a family environment that it is.”

The association is excited about a couple of events coming up this month. April 23 is New Rider Day, a partnership with City of Nanaimo parks and rec. Participants can sign up through the activity guide for a clinic and race. The following day is the first stop on the Sea Soil Vancouver Island Series, which will attract top racers from up and down the Island.

There are races every Sunday morning at Marie Davidson BMX Park, and next month Wednesday night racing will start up.
