Race walker wins provincial title

Nanaimo's fastest walker won the provincial championship.

Katelynn Ramage of Nanaimo District Secondary School won gold at B.C. School Sports' Track and Field Championships on the weekend in Burnaby in her 1,500-metre race walk event. Just as she did at Island championships last month, Ramage won by a huge margin, finishing in seven minutes, four seconds, 40 seconds better than anyone else.

The other local youth to score a top-three finish at provincials was Nanaimo Christian School's Joel DeSchiffart, who came third in the 2,000m steeplechase. DeSchiffart completed the course in 6:11.39. He also placed 10th in the 3,000m in 9:00.18.

Carly O'Sullivan, NDSS, eighth, 1,500m, 4:51.95, 10th, 1,500m steeplechase, 5:30.01; Leigh Richardson, NDSS, seventh, high jump, 1.55m; Maggie Hoult, NCS, ninth, discus, 29.82m; Mari Kondoh, Dover Bay, 10th, 1,500m, 5:03.05; Sean McKenzie, Dover Bay, sixth, 400m, 50.84; Garrett Dunlop, Dover Bay, eighth, 2,000m steeplechase, 6:25.44.
