Provincial track meet comes down to photo finish

Several locals had top-10 finishes at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Langley.

Nanaimo's best high school track and field athletes were right there with the very best in B.C.

Several locals had top-10 finishes at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Langley's McLeod Athletic Park.

The best finish came from Wellington Secondary School's Alyssa Mousseau, who won her junior girls' 800-metre final. The race was a photo finish, as Mousseau crossed the line in two minutes, 15.65 seconds, just four one-hundredths of a second ahead of Semiahmoo's Julia Greer.

Nanaimo District Secondary School's Miryam Bassett finished second in the senior girls' 800m in 2:15.34.

Erica DeSchiffart of Nanaimo Christian School came third in the senior girls' 1,500m steeplechase.

In senior boys' action, Andrew DeGroot of Dover Bay placed third in the 400m with a time of 50.24 seconds and Thomas Oxland, also of Dover, was third in the 800m with a time of 1:55.91.

Dover's Carter Higgins, competing in the junior boys' division, was second in the 400m in 53.08 seconds and third in the 800m in 2:01.46.

Junior girls - Tatiana Burtini, Dover, eighth, 100m, 13.03; Hassy Fashina-Bombata, seventh, high jump, 1.45m; Alyssa Mousseau, Wellington, sixth, 400m, 1:00.93, first, 800m, 2:15.65; Amy Morris, Wellington, sixth, 1,500m, 4:52.44, fifth, 3,000m, 10:37.88.
