Premier Pirates ready to battle North Delta

It’s beginning to get crowded at the top of the B.C. Premier Baseball League standings, so every game counts for the Nanaimo Hub City Paving Pirates if they want to remain in the upper echelon.

With the Parksville Royals, Langley Blaze, Pirates and Fraser Valley Chiefs all at or within close range of the top position, the Pirates aren’t taking Saturday’s doubleheader against the .500 North Delta Blue Jays lightly.

“Delta is a much better team than their record indicates,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “They are strong in all aspects of the game and they don’t make mistakes. Our guys know that Delta is one of the top teams in the league and won’t be at .500 for long.”

The Blue Jays are the only BCPBL team the Pirates haven’t seen so far this season, but Rogers expects them to be as strong defensively as they were in the past, so motivating the team will not be an issue.

“Our guys want to keep this record going, so there’s no problem motivating this team,” he said. “Sometimes that’s a concern with .500 or sub-.500 teams, but not with these guys. They want to win every game.”
