Pirates will strut their stuff

Sometimes it all goes according to plan.

That’s the case so far this spring for the Hub City Paving Pirates. Nanaimo’s B.C. Premier Baseball League club is in first place after a 5-1 start.

“There’s a lot of things that I think we expect, and it’s kind of transpired the way we wanted,” said Cody Andreychuk, Pirates first baseman.

Hard work at practice, good team chemistry and strong results, he said, have built a lot of confidence.

“We’re pretty excited, but we know it’s a long season so we’ve got to keep going at this pace,” said Kenton Schroter, Pirates pitcher.

That means the team can’t take any games off. This coming weekend, the Pirates play four winnable games, two in the Fraser Valley on Saturday (April 23) against the Abbotsford Cardinals (2-4), then two on Sunday at home against the Victoria Eagles (1-7).

There could be a danger of taking the opponents for granted, but Andreychuk said he doesn’t think that will be the case.

“We’re a team that I don’t think’s going to let up during the season,” he said. “We’re just going to keep mowing teams down.”

GAME ON … The Pirates’ home openers against the Eagles are slated for noon and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (April 24) at Serauxmen Stadium. Admission to the ballpark is $3 for one game or $5 for the doubleheader. Children 15 and under get in free.
