The Nanaimo Volleyball Club Mariners U18 girls served notice they are one of the elite teams on Vancouver Island.

The local squad finished seventh at the Volleyball B.C. Super Series tournament contested Saturday and Sunday at four different gymnasiums around the city.

The Mariners had a trying first match on Saturday, but then played the eventual-champion Seaside Surf extremely tough in their next match, taking the first set before falling 20-25, 25-12, 15-11.

Winning that set ended up being an important tie-breaker for the NVC Mariners in the playoff round, where they ended off Sunday with a 25-11, 25-12 loss to the Campbell River Crush.
