Nanaimo's soccer history highlighted

Historian Robert Janning will be in town to conduct a reading Thursday (May 17) at 6 p.m. at Nanaimo Harbourfront Library.

The Wellington Rovers take a team photo with the Challenge Cup in 1899 after capturing their second straight B.C. Football Association senior men’s championship. Nanaimo-area teams won five of the first eight provincial soccer championships.

Soccer has a long and storied history in Nanaimo and on Thursday (May 17) fans can hear some of those stories.

Historian Robert Janning will be in town to conduct a reading of his first book, Westcoast Reign: The British Columbia Soccer Championships 1892-1905 at 6 p.m. at Nanaimo Harbourfront Library.

His book covers early teams such as the Nanaimo Rangers,  Northfield Violets, Wellington Rovers and Riverside AFC out of Cedar.
