Nanaimo’s bantam boys’ lacrosse team capped off the summer with a provincial championship last weekend.
The U15 A2 Nanaimo Timbermen won gold at the B.C. Lacrosse Association championships July 20-23 in Greater Victoria.
Nanaimo defeated Port Moody 6-5 in the gold-medal game. Rylan Maughan was chosen MVP and a tournament all-star, and Nolan Penner was presented the Warrior Fair Play Award.
The Nanaimo District Minor Lacrosse Association had numerous teams that qualified for provincial championships this year. At female box lacrosse provincials July 6-7 in Mission, Nanaimo’s U17 B midget girls earned silver medals after a hard-fought 7-6 loss to Port Moody in the final. Rylee Wing was chosen as a tournament all-star and Jordan Hassey won the fair play award.
At the same tournament, the U13 B peewee girls earned bronze, winning the third-place game 5-2 against Mission. Sienna Palmer was chosen an all-star and Nadya Suna won the fair play award.
Also, the U15 B bantam girls played in their bronze-medal game but were beaten 4-1 by Ridge Meadows. Andi Peter was an all-star and Natalie Monckton won the fair play award.
Nanaimo also had a junior women’s squad at provincials. Keira Martin was an all-star at the tourney and Veronica Jones won the fair play award.
The other Nanaimo minor lacrosse team to make provincials this year was the U13 A1 peewee boys, whose tournament was held July 6-9 in Ridge Meadows. The Timbermen made it to the bronze-medal game where they lost 6-3 to Langley. Emmett Higginson Trotter was chosen a tournament all-star and Sion Kao won the fair play award.
