The Nanaimo NightOwls illuminated the dark during their inaugural season, but are getting ready now to turn the lights out on baseball season.

The city’s West Coast League team wraps up its season with one more home series against Serauxmen Stadium. The Port Angeles Lefties are in town for games Friday through Sunday, Aug. 5-7.

The NightOwls (17-32) are in last place in their division, and won’t make be one of the eight teams continuing on to playoffs.

But Nanaimo will try to add a few more highlights and a few more wins before ball season is over. The team had a memorable victory last week, as they came back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the first-place Bellingham Bells 8-7 in extra innings in a game July 27 at Serauxmen Stadium. Garrett Ostrander had the game-winning RBI in that one, Tim Holyk had two RBIs and reliever Hayden Wilcox was the winning pitcher.

The NightOwls also scored a win on a road trip over the August long weekend, defeating the Cowlitz Black Bears 12-9 on July 30. Tobey Jackson hit a home run in that one, Holyk had four hits, Aaron Marsh had a double and two singles and Cody Hendriks had three RBIs. Kotaro Uchida was credited with the win on the mound.

GAME ON … The NightOwls and Lefties play Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5-6, at 6:35 p.m., then close out the season Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium. For ticket information, visit www.nanaimonightowls.com.
