Nanaimo Hornets win second cup

The men’s Div. 1 rugby team defeated Westshore 37-31 in Victoria to capture the Cowichan Cup

The Nanaimo Hornets won their second championship of 2017, and they’re not done yet.

The men’s Div. 1 rugby team defeated Westshore 37-31 on April 8 in Victoria to capture the Cowichan Cup.

The Hornets reached the final by defeating the Cowichan Piggies 31-12 in a home match at the beginning of the month.

The Cowichan Cup victory follows up on the Hornets’ Times Cup championship win over the Port Alberni Black Sheep in February in Nanaimo.

The Hornets now move to provincial playdowns and as the No. 1 seed from Vancouver Island, they received an automatic berth into the semifinals. Nanaimo will host a mainland team April 29 at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park.
