Nanaimo Track and Field Club athletes had home track advantage, and turned it into provincial champions and podium finishes.
The B.C. Athletics Provincial Track and Field Championship Jamboree was held at Nanaimo’s Rotary Bowl stadium from July 7-9, featuring some of the province’s highest-calibre track stars in the U16, U18, U20 and senior divisions.
One of the standouts at the meet was U20 athlete Cesare Rednour-Bruckman, who won both the high jump and the long jump, clearing the bar at 1.95 metres in the former and leaping 6.46m in the latter. He also earned silver in triple jump.
Gage Zanette, competing in the senior division, won the 1,500m race in three minutes, 59.71 seconds, and followed up with silver in the 800m.
The Nanaimo Track and Field Club’s other jamboree champions were Haley Martin, who won gold in the the 400m hurdles for U18 athletes; Ava Gauthier, who won the 1,500m steeplechase for U16 girls; and Tessa Bell, who won the U16 girls’ triple jump.
Another highlight was the Nanaimo club’s runner-up finish in a senior women’s 4x400m relay exhibition, with Brea Gillette, Lucy Russell, Gauthier and Martin racing.
