Exhibition has begun for Nanaimo’s B.C. Hockey League team and players need to be housed.

In a press release, the Nanaimo Clippers said they seek billet families for the 2023-24 season and while roster spots were previously filled with players from Canada and the U.S., new rules will allow for players from other countries, too.

The team wants to provide “an exceptional experience for” players that extends off-ice, the press release said.

Billets are expected to “create a caring, stable and secure home-away-from-home for players,” the press release noted. Families will receive a grocery stipend of up to $600 for every player billeting, season tickets for immediate family in the household, access to exclusive team events and a chance to build a long-lasting relationship with players.

As for the hockey team’s on-ice happenings, they began exhibition play on the road against the Victoria Grizzlies on Sunday, Sept. 3.

The Clips next have home and road games versus the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 8 at Frank Crane Arena and Saturday, Sept. 9 in Alberni Valley, with puck-drop at 7 p.m. both nights.
