The Nanaimo Christian School Trail Blazers had a rare opportunity, home-court advantage, and they made the most of it.

The senior A boys’ basketball team played its one and only home game of 2016-17 on Friday night, beating the Gulf Islands Scorpions 73-69 at Oliver Woods Community Centre.

“It was definitely our best game of the season,” said Ben Sijpheer, Trail Blazers guard. “We’ve been struggling with playing individual basketball, but we actually pulled it together and played as a team and it paid off for our one home game of the season.”

Sijpheer led his team with 29 points, Michal Loots added 19 points and five blocks and Nathan Faganello scored 11 points.

The win against Gulf Islands was noteworthy because the Scorpions had beaten the Trail Blazers by double digits in a game earlier this season. Sijpheer said his team has developed since then.

“We’ve had a lot of guys putting in some good hours in the gym,” he said.

North Islands are scheduled for Ucluelet from Feb. 10-11.
