The Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners are just one week into the season. Four games isn’t a very large sample size, but it’s all the M’s can go on as they prepare for the next stretch of the Canadian College Baseball Conference season.

VIBI hosts the University of Calgary Dinos in a four-game series starting Friday (March 30).

Nanaimo’s college ball team went 1-3 to start the regular season last weekend. Now, the challenge is to be patient with players, while also giving others a chance.

“That’s always kind of the golden question for a coach,” said Jordan Blundell, VIBI manager. “What kind of changes should we do? What should we be looking at?

“In our batting order, we’ll see some changes, for sure. I think we’ll get some guys in some different spots. As far as the [pitching] rotation’s concerned, we might see another guy or two get a start.”

A week of practice in between series isn’t a lot of time, but Blundell said players can get better day by day, week by week.

“With the youth of our guys, you just never know when it will click for them or when they’ll really figure it out and when they’ll really understand their own swing and their own athletic ability,” he said.

GAME ON … The series against the Dinos starts Friday with a 4 p.m. game at Serauxmen Stadium. Saturday’s games are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday’s game is at 11 a.m.
