Mountain bike club hosts fun XC race

NANAIMO – Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club to host inaugural fun cross country race.

Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club is looking for riders to ramp up the excitement the club's inaugural Fun XC Race.

The event happens Sunday (Oct. 26) on a 7.5-kilometre course that covers some of Nanaimo's best single track and double track through the Humility and Cinnabar trails network.

"There's a lot more single track in this race than probably is standard in most XC races," said Jenn McGarrigle, Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club spokeswoman. "Most XC races use a lot more logging road. We're really looking forward to putting on this race."

Riders of all skill levels are encouraged to turn out. The tougher you are the farther you ride. The day's events are broken down into one 7.5 km lap for beginner riders, two laps for intermediates and three laps totalling 22.5 km for well-seasoned experts.

"I don't know who's going to do a third lap," McGarrigle said. "There's a couple people signed up for it, but yeah, that would be a lot in my opinion. I guess the hard core racers will do it, though."

Event-participants do not need a race licence or club membership to enter and the entrance fee is just $20.

Race plate pick up happens from 8:30-9:45 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m. off of Extension Road.

For those who want to get involved but don’t want to race, the club is looking for volunteers to help out on race day. To sign up, please e-mail Simon Kubacki, race director, at smkubacki@shaw.ca.
