Minor hockey teams end season strongly

Even at the end of a long hockey season, Nanaimo teams had something left to give at provincials.

Two Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association rep teams finished third at B.C. Hockey’s championship tournaments held around the province this week.

The most high-profile tourney for local fans was the midget Tier 1 boys’ championships, held Sunday through Wednesday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

There, the Nanaimo Pacific Boat Brokers Clippers compiled a 2-2-1 record to take third place, ending with an impressive 5-4 win Wednesday over the Surrey Thunder. The Thunder went on to win the provincial championship that night.

Also finishing third were Nanaimo’s North Island Extreme midget girls, who were 2-2-1 at their tournament in Invermere. The local girls defeated host Windermere Valley 8-0 on Wednesday to secure their standing.

Next best were the Nanaimo Clippers peewee Tier 1 boys, who placed fifth at their tourney in Prince George. The squad’s one win came on the last day of provincials, a dominating 8-4 decision over host P.G.

Both Nanaimo’s bantam Tier 1 boys and bantam girls went winless at their provincial championship tournaments in Abbotsford and Kelowna, respectively. The Mid Island Extreme girls played tough in every game, never losing by more than two goals.
