The Pacific Coast Soccer League men’s reserve team, formerly based in Ladysmith, plays most of its home games in Nanaimo this summer.

Mid Isle FC played a home game at Merle Logan Field Sunday, losing 1-0 to Chilliwack, and has another home date scheduled for Friday (May 11) against Vancouver’s Total Soccer Systems.

The squad is mostly U21 players, but five over-age players can dress each game.

“We have a fairly young squad with some really good veteran players with us…” said Bill Merriman, co-coach of the team. “The training sessions have been very good, high intensity and the guys have been working really well and improving every game.”

The goal, he said, is to return to the PCSL’s premiership next summer. In the meantime the Mid Isle FC Highlanders (0-2) want to be competitive and thinks they're close to breaking through with a win.

"We have enough talent to do it once everybody gets used to playing together," Merriman said.

GAME ON … Friday’s match starts at 6 p.m. at Merle Logan. Admission is free … Mid Isle FC is also fielding a women's reserve team this summer. That side, coached by Christian Grandvoinet, opens its season on the mainland with games Saturday in Vancouver and Sunday in Abbotsford.
