A Nanaimo-based ball team will compete for the title of best in the west.

The B.C. Cardinals are one of four teams entered in the Western Canada Baseball Association championships this coming weekend (Aug. 18-20) in Prince George.

Jereme MacKinnon and Dale Ballance, both from Nanaimo, are player-manager and player-coach, respectively.

The team mostly consists of players from Nanaimo and Victoria, but will also have some reinforcements from the Lower Mainland and the Interior.

“I think it’s going to be really neat,” said MacKinnon. “This is kind of the first time that Nanaimo and Victoria have teamed together to put together a team.”

The chemistry is building, as the players have been practising in Duncan.

Some of the other names on the team include former Nanaimo Pirates players Liam Goodall and Braeden Mousseau.

MacKinnon said there’s a range of ages on the team and he said the Cardinals have all the attributes to be able to be successful at Westerns.

“I think our strength is going to be in our defence and our pitching at the end of the day … and as a hitting team, we’ll be pretty strong,” he said.

Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the host Prince George team are the other squads entered.

“We’re all really excited to go this weekend to play together and to try to bring home a championship,” MacKinnon said.
