Mariners b-ball teams have playoffs in their sights

The VIU Mariners will go into the post-season on a winning note.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams won their regular-season finales on Friday on the road against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats. VIU’s women won 68-38 and then the men were 95-78 winners.

Sienna Pollard led the M’s ladies with 18 points and 16 boards on Friday and Victoria Brown also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Emily Clarke added 14 points.

In the men’s game, Usama Zaid accumulated 33 points, Bryson Cox scored 15 and Kaz Kobayashi added 14.

The night before, at the VIU gym, the M’s men beat the Camosun Chargers 102-76, but the women were edged out 54-50.

Zaid scored 27 in the victory, Eric D’Andrea scored 19 and Cox tallied 18. Jalen Schlegel led the team in rebounds with 10.

For the Mariners women, Pollard had 17 points and 13 boards and Kaitlyn Lafontaine hit five three-point shots and finished with 17 points.

The PacWest playoffs get underway March 2 in Squamish. The Mariners men (16-2) went undefeated in the winter semester to clinch the No. 1 seed, while the M’s women (10-8) grabbed the No. 3 seed.
