Mariner b’ball squads rumble over Bearcats

If last weekend is any indication, there’s no concern for the Vancouver Island University Mariners men’s and women’s basketball teams playing down to the competition.

Both teams sit atop the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association basketball standings and travelled to Abbotsford for a pair of games Friday and Saturday against the last place Columbia Bible College Bearcats.

The VIU women opened with a 102-41 win Friday and continued the dominance Saturday with a 95-33 victory.

It was a good weekend overall with two more road wins,” said coach Bill McWhinnie. “Everyone got to play and we did a number of good things.”

Brittany Knievel scored 22 points, Shayna Worthington added 19 while Jodi Mitchell and Alix Stupich scored 14 and 10 points respectively. Mitchell had a big game Saturday for the M’s with 30 points, pulling in seven rebounds and adding seven assists.

In men’s action against CBC, VIU won 105-42 on Friday and 83-55 Saturday.

Mike Wohlers shot well from the perimeter Saturday to tally 25 points while Patrick McCarty and Tyler Olsen both added 15 points with 10 and 12 boards, respectively.

The Mariners continue on the road this weekend (Jan. 28-29) with games against the Capilano Blues.
