The King of Westwood made it around the lake the fastest, with the Prince of Westwood right on his heels.
Byron Trajan was the winner of Saturday’s Run for the Mountain six-kilometre race at Westwood Lake Park, edging out youth-division winner Joel DeSchiffart by just nine seconds. Trajan finished the loop in 21 minutes, 21 seconds.
Also defending her crown was the Queen of Westwood, Erin Burrett, who finished in 23:49.
Rebecca Bassett is this year’s Princess of Westwood after posting a time of 25:37.
Felipe Edora and Kim Gagliano are the first Emperor and Empress of Westwood as the masters-division winners were recognized for the first time. Edora finished in 23:11; Gagliano in 25:16.
“It’s pretty neat to see pretty well every age group covered,” said Mike Thibodeau, race director.
One hundred and sixty-seven runners and walkers completed the race this year, about the same total as last year. Proceeds from the run go to Nanaimo and Area Land Trust’s Mout Benson Wilderness Park project.
Thibodeau said plans are in the works to build a website for the Run for the Mountain and try to continue to grow the race. The seventh annual event will be Sept. 15, 2012.
“People seem to be excited about the upcoming 2012 [run] before the 2011 is done, almost,” Thibodeau said.
