Karate athletes get kicks at provincials

Competitors from Nanaimo's Shima Karate School won their divisions at the Karate B.C. championships in Richmond in late May.

Shima Karate athletes became B.C. champions.

Competitors from Nanaimo's Shima Karate School won their divisions at the Karate B.C. championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval from May 28-29. The event attracted approximately 650 competitors.

Samantha Wolff was a double winner, winning gold in both forms and sparring. Coen Francis took first in forms, Neil Surry was first all-around in his division, Azia Deal and Richard Jane were first in their weapons competitions and Evan Milne won gold in team sparring.

Results include:

8-9 novice - Brea Gillette, second, forms, third, sparring; Morgan Scarisbrick, third, forms, third sparring.8-9 advanced - Azia Deal, third, sparring.9-and-under advanced - Oliver Hiderley, third, weapons.10-11 intermediate - Jade Fearn, third, forms.12-13 intermediate - Mackenzie Khakh, second, forms; Kyra Gillette, third, forms, third, sparring.12-13 advanced - Coen Francis, first, forms, third, sparring.13-and-under - Azia Deal, first, weapons; Damon Berg, second, weapons.14-15 intermediate - Ethan Robertson, third, forms, third, sparring.14-15 advanced - Samantha Wolff, first, forms; Evan Milne, first, team sparring.14-17 advanced - Samantha Wolff, first, sparring; Richard Jane, first, weapons; Liam Surry, second, weapons.16-and-over - Neil Surry, first, all-around.
