Juniors closer, but no cigar

The junior Timbermen showed they could play with the league’s best team, but the end result was another loss.

The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team (1-3) fell 16-10 to the Coquitlam Adanacs  (5-0) on Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

“The intensity was there so we’re happy with that,” said Nirmal Dillon, assistant coach with the Timbermen. “We fought really hard and if it had been another team, I think we would have beat them. They’re a tough opponent.”

The A’s leaped to a 7-0 lead after one period, so although the T-men outscored the visitors the rest of the way, it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

“We played a lot better; we actually showed some heart this game. It looks really good for the rest of the season,” said Joey Fendick, T-men player. “If we’d just played the whole way through, then we could have gave them a real run for it.”

Dillon said the team’s short man gave up too many goals.

“A couple guys were ball watching and they lost their checks. We can work on that,” he said.

Fendick led the offence with a hat trick, Kyle Hofer had two goals and two assists and Isaac Haack had six assists. Ryan Sage and McGregor Johnston supplied a pair of goals each and Paul Brebber had Nanaimo’s other tally. Devon Winter went the distance in goal, making 33 saves.

GAME ON … The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen play the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Tuesday (May 17) on the mainland. There are back-to-back home games this coming weekend at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, with the T-men hosting the Burnaby Lakers Saturday (May 21) at 3 p.m. and facing New West on Sunday at 5 p.m.
