Junior track athletes show podium form at provincials

The Nanaimo Track and Field Club had a contingent at the B.C. Junior Development Championships in Surrey over the long weekend.

Nanaimo Track and Field Club athletes were successful at the B.C. Junior Development Championships in Surrey over the long weekend.

The Nanaimo Track and Field Club's prospects are already among the best in the province.

The club sent a contingent to the B.C. Junior Development Championships in Surrey over the long weekend and the athletes collected 52 medals between them, the highest total ever for the Nanaimo club at the meet.

"Nanaimo's current tweens might just be the most athletic the city has ever seen," noted a club press release.

Nine-year-olds - Ava Martiniuk, first, high jump.

10-year-olds - Haley Martin, first, long jump, second, 60m, second, 100m dash, second, 60m hurdles, third, high jump; Lydia Paris, first, high jump, first, 4x100m relay; Natalie Croome, first, 4x100m relay; Katelyn Putz, first, 4x100m relay; Avery Henderson, third, 600m, third, shot put; Rhonde Lyle, third, 60m, third, long jump.

11-year-olds - Emma Kirk, first, javelin; Annika Lundman, first, 800m race walk, second, discus, third, javelin, first, 4x100m relay; Zachary Croome, first, medley relay; Benedek Horvath, first, medley relay; Krescyn Moonsamy, first, medley relay; Cody Watson, first, medley relay; Makenna Paugh, third, 800m race walk.

12-year-olds - Nate Paris, first, 80m hurdles, first, high jump, first, long jump, second, 200m, second, 200m hurdles, third, 100m dash, third, 4x100m; Sonya Urbanowicz, first, hammer throw, third, shot put; Jayden Watson, first, 1,200m, second, 800m, third, 300m, third, high jump, third, 4x100m; Stirling Henry, third, 200m, third, 4x100m; Luke Lavery, third, discus; Evelyn Trepke, second, 800m race walk; Jake Putz, third, 4x100m.

13-year-olds - Olivia Lundman, first, pole vault, first, 1,500m race walk, second, 200m, second, hammer throw, third, discus; Madison Paugh, first, javelin, first, hammer throw, third, discus; James Wakefield, first, pole vault.
