Junior Timbermen outscore Shamrocks

The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen defeated the Shamrocks 16-12 at Frank Crane Arena on Wednesday.

The junior A Timbermen are one of the hottest teams in the league after outfiring the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday.

The city's B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League club defeated the baby 'Rocks 16-12 at Frank Crane Arena, the first time Nanaimo's juniors had beaten their Island rivals since 2011.

"So it was a big win for us. I was proud of our guys," said Ken Morrison, the team's coach.

The Timbermen had a strong start, leading 5-3 after one period, and extended that to 13-7 through 40 minutes.

Morrison said there was great ball movement on offence, with guys moving around and cutting.

Dane Sorensen scored five goals, Corey Shires had a goal and six assists, Brett Hawrys had two goals and four helpers and Cody Short also tallied twice. Mitch Parker, Cole Kryworuchka, Brett Fleming, Taylor Raiche, Travis Mickelson and Darrin Wilson were other scorers and Pete Dubenski earned the win in goal as his team outshot the opposition 60-50.

Nanaimo's juniors have won three in a row, evening their record, and are setting their sights still higher in the standings.

"They're going into it believing they can beat anybody right now," Morrison said. "That's the attitude we have right now and the work ethic we have is great."

The T-men are still trying to smooth out their line changes and will try to be better disciplined as they turn their attention to the Burnaby Lakers and Port Coquitlam Saints, two teams they have already beaten during their win streak.

"We know we can go and beat these teams," said Morrison. "No one can beat us when we're five-on-five. We put that into their head so they think about not taking stupid penalties."

GAME ON … The junior A Timbermen host the Lakers on Saturday (May 24) at 5 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, then visit the Saints in PoCo the next day.
