Bucs beat Saanich Predators 3-2 in overtime

The Nanaimo Buccaneers hadn’t won a regular season game at the ‘Pirate Ship’ in a long time, but they did it last night.

The Bucs earned their first win of the season in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, defeating the Saanich Predators by a 3-2 score in overtime.

Tanner Truswell scored the game-winning goal after Eric Van Loon scored a game-tying goal with just over five minutes left in the third period. Andrew McKinnon also scored for Nanaimo, Hassen Hilmour had two assists and Darian Feser made 40 saves as his team was outshot 51-38.

The Buccaneers, 1-7, had just one win during the 2021-22 season.

GAME ON … The Bucs visit the Lake Cowichan Kraken on Sunday, Oct. 9, then host the Oceanside Generals on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC.
