High school hoops playoffs tip off

High school basketball season has reached the stage where teams need to keep winning to keep playing.

Senior AA girls’ North Island zones get underway on Thursday (Feb. 13) at Wellington Secondary School. Senior AA boys’ North Islands will be held at Kwalikum Secondary School at Qualicum Beach starting Thursday.

There were a few games around the city Tuesday night, including the last-ever high school senior basketball game at Cedar Secondary School gym. The Spartans senior AA girls were defeated 83-66 by the Mark Isfeld Ice. Shelby Dorman-Banks led the home team with 21 points, Marika Grubac scored 20 and Stefanie Talboys had 15.

The Cedar girls were coming off a second-place finish at a tournament in Calgary on the weekend.

Cedar's senior AA boys were supposed to play one last game in their home gym Tuesday night, but the Highland Raiders forfeited instead of driving down on a rainy night.

At Wellington Secondary School gym on Tuesday, the Wildcats senior AA girls defeated NDSS 59-24. Victoria Brown scored 17 points and Olivia Mjaaland had 15.

The 'Cats girls won two of three games at an exhibition tournament at Holy Cross School on the weekend, defeating Vernon 56-52, losing to the host team by 15 points, and then beating Sahali 78-45. Brown was player of the game against Vernon and Shania Sabbas led Wellington with 21 points against Holy Cross and 20 points versus Sahali. Ally Keir had 18 points in the Sahali game. All three of Welly's opponents on the weekend were provincially ranked teams.

"We played really well, it was a great weekend overall," said Nicole McRae, coach of the Wildcats. "We played tough teams and came up with wins."

GAME ON … The draw for the senior AA girls' North Islands hasn't been finalized, but Wellington will play at 2 p.m., Barsby will play at 5:30 p.m. and Cedar will play at 7:15 p.m. Woodlands and Nanaimo District will also be participating … The Barsby Blazers senior AA boys are the No. 2 seed at North Islands. Woodlands and Cedar are also playing in the tournament.
