GutBuster race challenges trail runners

Nanaimo athletes, and many others, survived a tough test of trail running on the weekend.

The GutBuster race was held Saturday at Westwood Lake Park and the surrounding area.

Victoria’s Shawn Nelson won the 21-kilometre race in one hour, 47 minutes and 51 seconds, while Lantzville’s Stefan Jakobsen placed second, about two minutes back. Top female finisher was Claire Morgan in 2:04:47.

Royd Burkart of Port Alberni won the 12.5km short course in 1:04:55, two minutes faster than second-place finisher Shelby Drope of Nanaimo. Kate Scallion won the female division in 1:18:49.
