A unique, long-running sports program has proven successful in Nanaimo and might be ready to broaden its borders.
Friday Nite Basketball is considering starting in the Cinnabar or Cedar area in the fall. Registrar Joan Hiemstra said there was plenty of interest from families south of town in the past, but they haven’t been keen to commute to central or north Nanaimo for the gym nights.
“My goal is to get people talking about it and for somewhere, someone to say, ‘I’m going to volunteer here,’” she said.
Friday Nite Basketball typically needs two or three volunteers per evening, including at least one adult and at least one person with the basketball knowledge or skills to coach boys and girls in Grades 1-10. The program is part of Athletes in Action, and every session includes Christian teachings along with the basketball drills and games.
