The Woodlands Eagles weren’t that far away from a playoff title this past weekend.
Woodlands Secondary School’s senior AA boys’ basketball team was runner-up at the North Island championships this past weekend at John Barsby Secondary School, losing 62-54 to the Kwalikum Kondors in Saturday’s final.
The Eagles played from behind the whole game, but stuck around and closed to within four points in the final minute.
Zack MacKay led the Eagles with 30 points and Max MacKay had 16.
The Barsby Blazers finished third, defeating the Ladysmith 49ers in Saturday’s other game. Chris DeGoutiere scored a game-high 38 points and Michael Wyse added 17 for the Blazers, while the 49ers were led by Nick Hayton’s 31 points.
The Eagles edged the Blazers 69-66 in Thursday’s semifinal. All four semifinalists advance to Islands, which start Thursday (Feb. 26) at Kwalikum Secondary.
In other playoff hoops action on the weekend, the Dover Bay Dolphins senior AAAA boys finished third at North Islands at Port Alberni. They advance to Islands starting Thursday in Victoria.
The Wellington Wildcats and NDSS Islanders senior AAA boys begin Islands Thursday in Victoria, as well.
