An all-Nanaimo matchup ended up being a bit of a mismatch.

The Woodlands Eagles senior AA boys’ basketball team continued its high-flying ways with a convincing 92-48 victory over the Nanaimo District Islanders on Tuesday at the Woodlands Secondary School gym.

“Our defence came together as a whole and we shut down their good players, we boxed out hard, got rebounds,” said Aaron Halsall, Eagles forward. “And we transitioned on our steals and turned them into baskets.”

Woodlands’ Bryson Cox scored a game-high 42 points to go with 10 steals, while Halsall added 22 points and 19 rebounds. Zack Williams had 15 points and 14 boards and Jordan Murray added 11 points. For NDSS, Aidan Goodall scored 18 and Tyus Barfoot had 16.

In north Nanaimo the Dover Bay Dolphins senior AAA girls had an easy time of it against the Cowichan Thunderbirds, winning 55-24. Dover scored 25 of its points in the first quarter and eased off as the game wore on to avoid running up the score.

“I had to take our press off because the other team was struggling with getting the ball over centre,” said Dale Nicks, coach of the Dover girls.

McKenzie Nicks and Jenna Ziemanski each scored 13 for the Dolphins and Gabby Jeffrey added 12.

Dover’s boys travelled to play the Thunderbirds in Duncan and lost 69-44. Mike Pereira led Dover’s offence with 18 points.

Wellington’s senior AA boys’ team was slated to host the Ladysmith ’49ers on Tuesday night but the score wasn’t available at press time. Welly’s senior AA girls travelled to Comox to play an exhibition game against Highland, but the Raiders forfeited.
