Defenceman secures college scholarship

Nanaimo Clippers defenceman Graeme McCormack is having a standout season and NCAA scouts noticed.

The B.C. Hockey League club announced Monday that McCormack has committed to attend Bemidji State University and play Div. 1 hockey for the Beavers in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association starting in 2012-13.

"Mac has been very consistent for us all season and is very capable of taking his game to the next level," said Bill Bestwick, Clippers coach, in a press release. "Mac has all the tools to be an impact player in the WCHA."

McCormack, 19, is seventh in the BCHL in points by a defenceman with 39 in 52 games this year.

"I am very relieved and happy about committing to Bemidji," McCormack said. "I'd like to thank my teammates and coaching staff for helping me achieve this goal."

McCormack missed Saturday's game against the Quesnel Millionaires due to injury but is expected back in the lineup for the Clippers' next game Friday (Feb. 11) in Duncan against the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
