Cyclocross challenges every racer

The Cross on the Rock cyclocross series held races Saturday and Sunday in Nanaimo, with the championships at Beban Park followed by a series race at Bowen Park the next day.

The unique extreme sport of cyclocross is one of the toughest tests of pedal power, and it’s becoming more and more mainstream on Vancouver Island.

The Cross on the Rock series held races Saturday and Sunday in Nanaimo, with the championships at Beban Park followed by a series race at Bowen Park the next day.

Organizers report that 189 different riders participated on the weekend, 139 at the Beban race and 154 at Bowen. Sunday’s field was the second-largest ever at a Cross on the Rock race.

Beban Park, Oct. 15

Women 16-19 - Mykelti Berg, fourth.

Women 35-plus - Carey Sather, second; Janna Gillick, third, Victoria Boyd, sixth; Charlene Stewart, eighth; Rose Houle, ninth.

Boys 12-15 - Brodie Hay, fourth.

Men 40-49 - Normon Thibault, first; Ron Hewitson, seventh; Ken Olson, eighth.

Men 50-plus - Bill McMillan, third; Derek Steel, eighth

Bowen Park, Oct. 16

Beginner women - Cheryl Murch, first; Colleen Wtorek, second; Ryla Belcia, third; Tina Holzwarth, fourth.

Beginner men - Simon Kubarki, third; Corey Friesen, fourth; Murray Walker, fifth; Kevin McMillan, 10th.

Intermediate men - Stefan Jakobsen, third; Shawn Boyd, seventh.

Intermediate women - Victoria Boyd, first; Rose Houle, seventh; Charlene Stewart, eighth; Mykelti Berg, 10th.

Masters men - Bill McMillan, sixth; Kirby Villeneuve, ninth.

Expert women - Carey Sather, seventh.
